It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of Richard "Dick" McGowen, who passed away on January 7, 2026, at the age of 90. A beloved figure in our Pinehurst community, Dick was truly the man, the myth, the legend, and a cherished Pinehurst legend. He embodied the essence of Pinehurst with his ever-present smile and signature mustache.
For over 18 years, he and his late wife, Kay McGowen, devoted themselves to running the Limeport Hotel in Coopersburg, Pennsylvania, where they created countless cherished memories for guests and friends alike. Their dedication to hospitality was evident in every interaction, establishing a lasting legacy of kindness that would follow them to Pinehurst when they retired in 2000.
I had the pleasure of meeting Dick on this very stool many years ago on St. Patrick’s Day; he was the ultimate leprechaun, bringing joy and laughter to everyone around him. In Pinehurst, Dick continued to embrace the community with the same spirit of warmth he was known for in Pennsylvania. He formed many friendships, sharing stories and laughter. Dick's love for life was infectious; he had a way of making everyone feel welcome and appreciated.
Cheers to our friend Dick—a true fixture here in the Village of Pinehurst. A familiar face, a friendly smile, and a regular at Maxie’s, Dick had a way of making this town feel even more like home. Whether it was a quick hello, a good story, or simply sharing a seat at the bar, he brought connection, laughter, and heart to every visit.
In anticipation of the upcoming U.S. Open in 2024, we remember how Dick (featured in a commercial for the U.S.Open here in 2024) not only celebrated our golf heritage but also made every occasion feel like a local holiday. His spirit will be deeply missed, reminding us all of the camaraderie and joy he brought to Pinehurst.
Friends like Dick are what make our village more than just a place—it's a beautiful community. He will always be remembered, always be missed, and always have a seat waiting....
Dick's family encourages you to support two of his favorite places—Maxie’s Grill & Taproom and The Pine Crest Inn—where he enjoyed sharing meals and creating memories with friends. Whether it was a casual gathering or a special occasion, these places were close to his heart.
If you wish to honor Dick's legacy further, consider making a donation in his name to your favorite charity or to FirstHealth Hospice, whose compassionate care made a significant impact in his life.
May the road rise to meet you, Dick, with your golf cart parked and waiting. Cheers!
Forever part of Pinehurst.
