As an artist, I find my greatest inspiration right in our community’s streets and landmarks. Through my plein air painting, I aim to capture the spirit of Southern Pines, transforming familiar sights into art that celebrates our rich history and vibrant culture.

One of the most iconic landmarks I’ve had the privilege to paint is the Sunrise Theatre. Built in 1929, the Sunrise Theatre has served as the heart of entertainment in Southern Pines for nearly a century. Originally opened as a silent film venue, it was later renovated in the 1940s to include a vibrant neon marquee, becoming a fixture for movies, live performances, and community events. Its art deco architecture, with elegant details and a grand marquee, embodies the golden age of Hollywood and has remained a beloved symbol of our town’s cultural heritage.

Over the decades, the Sunrise Theatre has hosted countless classic films, concerts, comedy shows, and community gatherings. It’s more than just a building; it’s a gathering spot that has brought generations of residents together, fostering a sense of unity and pride. Today, the theatre continues to serve as a vibrant arts and entertainment venue, with ongoing events that keep its legacy alive in the heart of downtown Southern Pines.

Just a just across the street, Southern Pines Train Station, which opened in 1898. This historic station played a crucial role in shaping the development of Southern Pines. It connected our town to major cities such as Charlotte and Raleigh, and was central to the growth of the region as a destination for tourism, military, and commerce. During the early 20th century, the railroad brought in visitors, soldiers, and new residents, transforming Southern Pines from a quiet railroad stop into a thriving community.

Together, the Sunrise Theatre and the historic train station tell the story of Southern Pines’ evolution—fusing culture, transportation, and community expansion. My murals aim to honor these stories, capturing the timeless beauty and significance of these landmarks. With each brushstroke, I celebrate the rich history that continues to influence our sweet little town today.

The Sunrise Theatre remains a vital cultural hub. Coming up, you can look forward to exciting performances including live music, classic film screenings, comedy nights, and special community events. These shows help keep the theatre’s legacy alive and vibrant, making it a central part of Southern Pines’ lively arts scene. Be sure to check their schedule for upcoming performances — there’s always something exciting happening.

My hope is that these murals inspire local pride and curiosity, encouraging everyone to discover and appreciate the history woven into our streets. Art is more than just what hangs on walls; it’s the stories we tell, the memories we cherish, and the community we build.

Next time you’re downtown, take a moment to admire these places and enjoy the upcoming performances at the Sunrise Theatre. Our history is alive in every corner, and through art, we keep that story going.

Always,

— Pat
