Merritt’s Grill isn’t just a restaurant—it's a journey through time, a community pillar, and for many, a home away from home. Situated in the heart of Chapel Hill, this historic spot has become an essential part of the local landscape.

From Gas Station to Iconic Eatery

Merritt's began its life in 1929 as an Esso gas station and convenience store, owned by Eben and Ruby Merritt. It served as a gathering place for decades, where locals could fill up their tanks and catch up on the latest news. This strong sense of community laid the groundwork for what Merritt's would eventually become.

A New Chapter

In 1991, the reins were handed to Robin and Bob Britt. Their vision moved beyond fuel to food, and the transformation was nothing short of magical. Robin's lovingly crafted BLT, affectionately dubbed the "love sandwich," catapulted Merritt’s into culinary fame during the 2000s. The combination of crispy bacon, fresh lettuce, and juicy tomatoes quickly captured the hearts (and taste buds) of locals and visitors alike.

A Sanctuary for Families and Students

For families visiting loved ones receiving cancer treatment nearby, Merritt’s offers more than just a meal—it provides comfort. The warmth of the staff and the familiarity of each bite create a sanctuary for those seeking solace and connection.

With a location just a short distance from campus, Merritt's is also a popular spot for University of North Carolina students. Its new on-campus location in Lenoir Dining Hall has made it even more accessible, ensuring students can enjoy its beloved fare.

A Local Favorite

The down-home atmosphere and consistent food quality have made Merritt’s a longtime favorite for Chapel Hill residents and "townies." Many have fond memories of visiting since childhood, a testament to the eatery's enduring appeal.

My Artistic Perspective on This Special Place

My recent plein air painting of Merritt’s captures the lively essence of this beloved spot. This method emphasizes capturing the effects of natural light, atmosphere, and color in real-time, fostering spontaneity and immediacy in the work. The vibrant brushstrokes reflect the lively atmosphere—how sunlight filters through the trees, the warm glow of the red umbrellas, and the lively interactions of patrons. It’s a direct, heartfelt way to portray the dynamic, ever-changing character of Merritt’s.

I encourage you to visit Merritt’s at 1009 S Columbia St, Chapel Hill, NC 27514, and check out my plein air painting in person. I hope you love Merritt's as much as my family and I do—seeing it through my artistic eyes makes it all the more special.

Always,
