A Magical Afternoon with Pat McBride at Gulley’s Fall Open House
As an artist, there’s nothing quite as enchanting as the moment when nature and creativity come together in perfect harmony. Recently, I had the privilege of being the guest plein air artist at Gulley’s Garden Center & Flower Bar’s Fall Open House in Southern Pines—a weekend that felt like stepping into a dream painted in rich fall hues.
On September 12th and 13th, the air was filled with the sweet scent of pumpkins, mums, and crispy autumn leaves, creating the perfect backdrop for a day of artistic magic. I set up my easel amidst the colorful bounty, inspired by the lively scene before me: an old wooden wheelbarrow, weathered by time but full of life, overflowing with a bouquet of vibrant fall flowers and greenery.

With each brushstroke, I aimed to capture the warmth and subtle glow of the season. It was a joy to watch the sunlight dance across the blooms and to bring to life that rustic wheelbarrow—a symbol of harvest, hard work, and simple beauty. As I painted, visitors gathered around, their eyes full of curiosity and appreciation, sharing stories of their own favorite seasonal traditions.
The entire event felt like a fairy tale come alive: designer-crafted wreaths hanging from every corner, the hum of joyful conversations, and children’s laughter echoing in the breeze. Guests wandered through aisles of colorful plants, lush centerpieces, and charming decor, found inspiration in the artistry of talented local designers and artists, including myself.
What made this moment even sweeter was the warmth of the community—the gentle “meet-and-greet” with people and even some furry friends from Caring Hearts for Canines, bringing smiles and wagging tails along. And as the sun dipped lower, I shared my finished painting with those who watched me work—a small window into the peaceful, enchanting world of fall through my eyes.

For me, plein air art isn’t just about creating a picture; it’s about capturing the magic of the moment—the fleeting beauty that whispers to our hearts and leaves us with a sense of wonder. I am grateful to have been part of such a charming celebration, where the spirit of fall, community, and art intertwined in the most beautiful way.
May this painting and this memory remind us all to cherish the simple, beautiful things around us—the harvests of nature and creativity—and to always leave a little space for magic in our lives.
LOVE ALWAYS,
~Pat
